Sensor Technology Could Reduce LCD TV Power Consumption
Saturday, 11 October 2008

A new report from LG Electronics confirms the energy saving potential of Intelligent Sensor technology. LG products with the technology installed were shown to consume significantly lower amounts of energy. This news comes as many consumers are seeking new ways to save energy for either environmental or purely economical reasons.

TÜV SÜD, a major European organisation for testing and certification, conducted the independent tests. The results showed that LCD models using Intelligent Sensor technology had as much as a 69.5% reduction in power use when compared to standard TVs.

The Intelligent Sensor technology is a fairly revolutionary addition. The sensor utilizes a 4,096-step algorithm to determine the amount of light in the room. The television then adjusts internal settings to produce the best picture for the amount of light. These adjustments to settings, such as the output of the backlight and contrast and colour, considerably increase energy efficiency. The technology is being added to several models in LG's line, with the LG7000, LG5000, and the LG Scarlet leading the way.

Intelligent sensors aren't the only advancement though. LG also holds a place of honor with the biggest range of IDTVs currently recognized and registered through the Energy Saving Recommended (ESR) scheme granted by the Energy Saving Trust. This group ensures that all the marked products offer significant power savings. In general, all of their ESR models are able to reduce power consumption by roughly 20%.
