LCD TVs Regain Ground On Plasmas When It Comes To True Blacks
Wednesday, 15 October 2008

New technology could give the LED TV a prime spot in the world of precision picture when it comes to creating pure black.

An LED TV is just a variation of an LCD TV. The only difference is the method used to create the image. The single backlight of the LCD is thrown out in favor of arrays of LED backlights. The big feature is that the individual arrays can be completely shut off to boost screen performance and give a richer black color. LED lights will also get rid of the motion tracking issues found in LCD technology. LED TVs will be able to greatly reduce the motion blur while also providing fuller and more varied colors.

LEDs in LCD TV's aren't anything special. They've been around for awhile. The big news is that RGB LED technology is undergoing a new refinement in several companies. The new RGH backlights will be fully controllable and able to display full-color instead of the usual black and white nature of dimming.

Sharp will be the first to offer this in their new series of X LCD TV's. The new 52 inch and 65 inch versions will have a limited international release. Sharp is already claiming that they'll beat Pioneer's Kuro line for black colour.
